Tinubu Prolongs FEC Session; Labour Halts Power Sector Operations
President Bola Tinubu has prolonged the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting to address numerous outstanding memos, with discussions set to continue into Tuesday. The session commenced at noon on Monday with over 40 memos scheduled for deliberation from various ministries. Idris Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, confirmed that critical issues remained unresolved, prompting the extension. Meanwhile, the meeting coincides with Labour’s nationwide picketing of power distribution companies, protesting against electricity tariff hikes and the removal of subsidies in the power sector.
The protests have disrupted operations at various electricity distribution offices across the country. Labour leaders demand the reversal of power sector privatization and the recovery of public electricity assets sold by the government. They argue that the tariff increases disproportionately affect workers and small businesses, exacerbating unemployment and economic challenges. Labour also calls for the implementation of agreements made with the government in 2021 and 2023, including halting further tariff increases until certain conditions are met. In response, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) acknowledges Labour’s concerns and pledges to address affordability issues in electricity tariffs.
