Banks are reducing their operations following an undersea cable cut, while engineers work to restore services
Thursday’s undersea cable cuts disrupted broadband Internet connectivity to Nigeria and other West African countries, prompting banks, financial institutions, telecom companies, and related firms to reduce their operations on Friday. Customers experienced frustration as major transactions became impossible.
Telecom engineers were deployed to the points of the cuts between Senegal and Cote D’Ivoire to swiftly repair the fibre optic cables from Europe and restore services.
The outage began in Ghana on Thursday morning, affecting mobile and fixed data services nationwide. The disruption spread to other African countries, including Nigeria, by the afternoon, impacting banking and other Internet-dependent services.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed the disruption in data and voice services along the African West Coast. The NCC stated that multiple cable cuts caused faults in major undersea cables, affecting countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Cote d’Ivoire.
Repair efforts were underway, with the affected cable operators working to restore services as quickly as possible. MainOne, a key Internet provider for Nigerian banks, experienced a significant fibre cut, leading to outages that left some banks offline and customers unable to access banking apps or use USSD codes.
