The Canadian government has made significant changes to its work permit regulations, allowing foreign workers to change jobs without waiting for permit approvals. This update aims to enhance flexibility, minimize delays, and benefit both workers and employers.

According to TravelBiz, this temporary public policy allows eligible foreign nationals to start new jobs immediately after submitting a work permit application. This change eliminates previous restrictions that led to costly employment gaps and hindered job transitions.
The policy is designed to reduce unemployment gaps, facilitate job changes for workers, accelerate hiring for employers, and support the financial stability of temporary foreign workers in Canada.
### Eligible Groups for the New Policy
The updated policy applies to three specific categories of foreign workers:
1. **Individuals on “Maintained Status”**: These are workers whose permits have expired but who have already applied for renewal. Previously, they were restricted by the terms of their expired permits and could not change employers. Under the new policy, they can start new jobs while their renewal applications are being processed.
2. **Valid Work Permit Holders Seeking a Job Change**: Foreign workers with valid permits that are tied to a specific employer or occupation can now switch jobs immediately after submitting a new application. This update is particularly beneficial in cases of layoffs, better job opportunities, or workplace issues.

3. **Previously Exempt Workers Now Requiring a Permit**: Some individuals who previously held roles that did not require a work permit may now need one for a new job or employer. These workers can also begin working as soon as they submit their application, without waiting for final approval.
### Programs Covered Under the Policy
This temporary measure applies to job offers and roles under the following programs:
– Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)
– International Mobility Program (IMP)
If a valid job offer exists and a work permit application has been submitted under either of these programs, the worker can start employment without delay.
### How to Access This New Flexibility
To benefit from the updated policy, follow these three simple steps:
1. Obtain a legitimate job offer from a Canadian employer.
2. Submit a new work permit application related to the offer.
3. Start the new job immediately, without waiting for final approval from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Previously, foreign workers in Canada had to wait for full approval of a new work permit before changing employers or roles, often resulting in long job gaps, financial difficulties, and hiring delays.
This new temporary public policy represents a significant step toward modernizing Canada’s immigration and labor systems, reducing worker downtime and helping employers fill positions more quickly.
