Dangote Refinery Clarifies Reorganisation: Cites Sabotage, Dismisses Mass Layoffs

Dangote refinery vs PENGASSAN fight worsens as members to cut gas supply to Dangote refinery

Members of the Nigerian Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) have been instructed to completely stop the supply of gas to Dangote refinery with immediate effect.

While the association was working to “resolve” the matter, it announced on September 26 that the refinery had laid off some of its employees.

In what it described as a restructuring effort, the Dangote refinery later acknowledged firing several employees, claiming that “only a small number were affected.”

Following the announcement, PENGASSAN urged the management of the Dangote refinery “to recall all terminated Nigerian workers”.

Lumumba Okugbawa, PENGASSAN’s general secretary, charged in a statement released Friday that the refinery had disengaged its members in response to their exercise of their constitutional right to unionisation.

“They have gone further on a mission of misinformation and propaganda to justify this illegitimacy rather than engaging meaningfully with us to right the wrong,” the statement reads.

“Consequent to these, you hereby directed to cut off gas supply to NGIC effective immediately.”

The union ordered that the loading process “for vessel headed there should be halted immediately” and ordered all of the refinery’s crude oil supply valves to be closed.

All chairpersons impacted by the directive were requested by the union to report the status of their efforts as soon as possible.

“NGIC Chairman, ensure that gas supply to the Refinery is cut off effective immediately,” PENGASSAN said.
