After the killing of 16 Nigerian soldiers, a fire ravages a Delta community, forcing residents to flee.
Sixteen Nigerian soldiers died in Delta State while trying to resolve a land dispute between two communities.
The soldiers were ambushed and killed by youths from Okuama community on Thursday, March 14th. They were part of a peacekeeping force sent to the area after a reported hostage situation.
Sadly, the soldiers, including a Lieutenant Colonel, two Majors, one Captain, and twelve others, were surrounded and killed. It was a terrible loss.
Following the deaths, reports say some angry soldiers burned down buildings in Okuama.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident and is investigating the attack. They are also searching for those responsible.
This is a tragic situation. Our hearts go out to the families of the soldiers who lost their lives.
Delta Governor Condemns Soldier Killings, Vows Justice
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, strongly condemned the killing of soldiers in the Okuama community. He called the attack “despicable” and against the state’s peaceful culture.
Military Investigation and Arrests
The Chief of Defence Staff ordered an immediate investigation and arrests of those involved. The military is committed to maintaining peace and security, and a few arrests have already been made.
Governor’s Statement
Governor Oborevwori offered condolences to the families of the soldiers and the military. He pledged to find those responsible and hold them accountable. He emphasized that Delta values peace and will not tolerate such violence.
Call for Calm and Security Measures
The Governor urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding. The state government will take all necessary steps to protect lives and property.
