Nigerians are responding to revelations from a former aide of Peter Obi, detailing the purchase of 400 SUVs for traditional rulers.

Oseloka Obase, the former Secretary to the Anambra State Government during Peter Obi’s administration, has disclosed how his principal acquired 400 SUVs for traditional rulers, despite advocating for a simple and thrifty lifestyle.

Obi, who contested for president under the Labour Party banner in 2023, is renowned for his stance on reducing governance costs at both state and federal levels. However, Obase’s revelation about the SUV procurement during Obi’s tenure as governor contrasts sharply with his public image and political stance in Nigeria.

Addressing the controversy surrounding Erisco Foods, Obase discussed the potential impact of crises on corporate entities in a series of tweets on Monday, March 11, 2024. He recounted an incident during his time with Obi, where one of the 400 SUVs purchased for traditional rulers in Anambra was involved in a crash. This incident nearly led to a public relations disaster for Innoson Motors.

Reacting to this development, Reno Omokri, former special assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, criticized the inconsistency. He questioned the rationale behind criticizing the National Assembly for purchasing 400 SUVs for legislators while Obi, during his tenure as governor, also procured the same number for Anambra Igwes.

Omokri humorously remarked, “This is almost spiritual. 400 versus 400. Exact number. His own was not a waste. Maybe it was a waist!”
