Japa Surge: Nigerians Increasingly Seek to Leave

A significant surge in Nigerians seeking to emigrate, or “japa,” has been driven by worsening economic conditions and a quest for better opportunities. Recent data reveals a steep rise in the desire to leave the country over the past decade. According to the Gallup World Poll, willingness to emigrate among Nigerians increased from 41% in 2010-2012 to 53% by 2021. The trend continued to escalate, reaching 71% in 2022, according to another Gallup survey. NOIPolls also reported that 63% of Nigerians were willing to relocate in 2023, with even higher numbers in the South-East (74%) and South-South (70%).

Economic factors are the primary drivers behind this wave of emigration. Many Nigerians believe that living conditions and opportunities abroad are significantly better than those available domestically. A NOIPolls report indicated that 50% of Nigerians think those living abroad enjoy superior living conditions, and 54% believe they have more opportunities. Furthermore, over 51% of Nigerians are confident that expatriates are financially better off.
