Landmark Beach Resort Faces Demolition for Coastal Highway Project

Lagos State Government plans to demolish a section of the popular Landmark Beach Resort to make way for the construction of a coastal highway. The highway is part of a larger 700km Lagos-Calabar project undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works in collaboration with Lagos State.

Demolition Notice Issued:

A letter dated March 19, 2024, signed by the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, informed Landmark owner Paul Onwuanibe that sections of the property, including the Beach Resort, Kids and Bay Arena, Members Area, and Lagos Beach Club, fall within the designated right-of-way for the highway by 50 meters. The letter grants only seven days for the removal of these sections.

Onwuanibe’s Concerns:

Onwuanibe expressed shock and disappointment at the short notice, comparing it to an “April fool’s joke.” He highlighted the significant economic impact of the resort, valued at over $200 million. The Landmark site houses over 80 businesses, provides more than 4,000 jobs and generates over $1.5 million in annual tax revenue for the Lagos government.

Prior Notification:

The Lagos government previously announced the highway project and potential demolition in national newspapers The Nation and The Punch on March 15th and 16th, 2024.

Next Steps:

The letter requests Onwuanibe to submit ownership documents for the property to the Permanent Secretary of the Lands Bureau. This suggests a potential negotiation or compensation process, although details remain unclear.
