NCC Introduces 6GHz Band to Tackle Nigeria’s Network Challenges
In a bold move to address Nigeria’s persistent network outages and improve internet connectivity, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is opening the 6GHz spectrum band for network providers. This development comes after a presentation at the Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies, where it was revealed that Nigeria experiences over 1,600 fiber cuts and 500 network outages each month, affecting over 83 million users annually. The introduction of the 6GHz spectrum is expected to significantly reduce network congestion and improve overall service quality.
Acting head of spectrum administration at NCC, Atiku Lawal, explained that Nigeria is joining over 70 countries in utilizing the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) applications. The move will help alleviate the pressure on the existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, which have become overcrowded, limiting the potential of current Wi-Fi networks.
The Benefits of 6GHz for Nigeria’s Connectivity
The 6GHz band is a radio frequency spectrum that supports multi-gigabit speeds, enabling faster internet connections. By opening this band, Nigeria will witness improved Quality of Service (QoS), especially as Wi-Fi 6 offload becomes more prevalent in homes, offices, and public areas like airports. Aminu Maida, executive vice chairman of the NCC, highlighted that the 6GHz spectrum offers more available bandwidth, which is crucial for meeting the growing demand for high-speed internet and advanced applications across Nigeria.
Professor Caroline Alenoghena of the Federal University of Technology Minna emphasized that the adoption of 6GHz technology will increase wireless capacity, speed, and reduce network congestion, helping to close the digital divide in rural areas. Tony Emoekpere, president of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), noted that this new technology will be essential for the future of Nigeria’s telecommunications growth and in providing high-speed internet to underserved areas.
Challenges and Investment Needs
Despite the promising benefits, deploying services on the 6GHz band will require significant investments to upgrade Nigeria’s mobile networks and Wi-Fi infrastructure. Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, warned that the harsh economic conditions affecting telecom operators may pose challenges, as companies struggle with reduced returns on capital. Both MTN Nigeria and Airtel Africa experienced N1.29 trillion in foreign exchange losses in 2023, with MTN reporting its first loss since 2019.
Industry experts like Gbolahan Awonuga, executive secretary of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), stressed that operators need financial resources to upgrade infrastructure and import equipment necessary to fully benefit from the 6GHz band. This includes the installation of new base stations, antennas, and fiber optic cables.
Encouraging Smaller ISPs and Public-Private PartnershipsTo fully leverage the potential of the 6GHz spectrum, Tony Emoekpere called for policies that encourage public-private partnerships, reduce Right of Way (RoW) charges, and simplify regulatory processes. He also stressed the importance of supporting smaller ISPs, which may not have the financial strength to compete for high-cost licensed spectrum but could benefit greatly from the unlicensed spectrum offered by Wi-Fi 6.
