Nigeria Power Restoration: TCN to Complete Repairs on Transmission Lines by November 3, 2024

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has declared that by Sunday, November 3, 2024, the ongoing repairs to the broken transmission lines that caused the recent blackout in northern Nigeria will be concluded.

However, TCN also pointed out that plans have been put in place to provide 400 megawatts to certain locations throughout the next day.

At a press meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, TCN Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz announced this development and gave Nigerians an update on their efforts to bring power back to the northern region.

The 330-kilovolt Ugwuaji–Apir double circuit transmission lines 1 and 2 tripped on October 22, causing a power outage in regions of north-central Nigeria as well as the northeast and northwest.

Furthermore, according to TCN, there is now less bulk electricity available to Kaduna, Kano, and other northern important cities as a result of vandalism on the Shiroro-Kaduna line.

Two days later, TCN reported that the blackout was caused in part by a 330kv transmission line that had snapped in the swampy woodland of Igumale, Benue State.

TCN stated on Monday that it was making every effort to restore the bulk power supply, but that insecurity had caused delays in repairs.

Additionally, President Bola Tinubu ordered TCN to speed up repairs and asked Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, to offer security assistance.

The TCN MD gave an update, stating that the business had sent experts to finish the restoration and that it would be distributing between 500 and 600 megawatts to the northern area by Sunday.

He stated, “Restoring one of these lines will allow TCN to wheel about 400MW of power through that corridor. TCN is also intensifying efforts to repair and restore the second line on Ugwuaji-Apir by Sunday, 3 November 2024.

“This will enable TCN to wheel a substantial quantum of power from Apir to Jos, Kaduna, and Kano.

“Whenever the Shiroro-Kaduna line is out, the only other gateway used to supply the northern region is through the Ugwuaji–Apir transmission lines.

“Unfortunately, that line was also vandalized, leaving us with only lines one and two to supply power to that region.

“For line two, nearly five spans of the line were vandalized. Our engineers are working to restore that line, but due to security concerns, they require a military escort.

“By 6 pm, our engineers have to leave the area for safety, return to a secure location for the night, and resume work in the morning.
