Nigeria’s persistently inadequate road quality stems from issues identified by NHITE and NBRRI.
The Nigerian Highway Institution and Transportation Engineers (NHITE) and the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) have highlighted the persistent issue of poor road conditions in Nigeria. Prof.
Samson Duna, the Director General of NBRRI, emphasized the importation of substandard construction materials by contractors as a significant factor. He noted that these materials evade testing, leading to inferior road quality and durability.
Duna called upon road contractors to cease using such materials and emphasized the need for collaboration
Duna called upon road contractors to cease using such materials and emphasized the need for collaboration with NHITE to ensure the use of standard materials in road construction. Additionally, NBRRI has conducted research on various roads, revealing issues such as low-quality materials, improper construction processes, and drainage failures. To address these challenges, the institute plans to host capacity training programs and practical demonstrations on road construction techniques. Engr.
Hassan Saidu, National Chairman of NHITE, echoed the importance of collaboration with NBRRI to enhance the quality of road construction and implement joint research initiatives.
