NIMC has introduced a mobile app for Nigerians to easily update their name, date of birth, and other details on their NIN.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has launched a mobile app for Nigerians to update their National Identification Number (NIN) details. Through the app, people can correct errors in their name, date of birth, and phone numbers associated with their NIN.
To access the service, users need to register on the app or online portal. They will be asked for their NIN, last name, and email address before they can proceed with modifying their data.
Previously, Nigerians faced challenges when trying to modify their NIN data
Previously, Nigerians faced challenges when trying to modify their NIN data, often having to visit NIMC offices nationwide. Funmi Opensanwo, the NIMC regional coordinator in Alausa, Lagos, clarified that fees for corrections varied, including N15,000 for date of birth corrections, N5,000 for card renewal or replacement, and the same amount for name and address modifications. These fees are paid to the Treasury Single Account (TSA), not to individuals.
This clarification came amid allegations that NIMC officials were unlawfully demanding fees to link NINs with SIM cards. The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) mandated all mobile networks to link phone numbers to NINs in 2021. Additionally, NCC extended the compulsory linking of NIN to bank accounts, with defaulters facing account suspension.
