Aliko Dangote, the chairman of the Dangote Group, has stated that Nigerians must cease medical tourism and that the nation should begin domestic medicine production.

He made this statement on Wednesday at the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers event in Lagos.

He emphasised the need of collaborating with Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation to enable all Nigerians, even the wealthy, to receive medical care in Nigeria should they become ill.

“What we need to do is to make sure we stop this health tourism and we should now get in to start producing our own drugs,” Dangote said while speaking during a panel discussion at the event.

“We should now make sure that when we are sick, we don’t have to travel abroad, all of us, but we need to do a partnership with Bill (Gates).”

Africa’s richest man recalled that the Dangote Foundation through partnership with the Gates Foundation has helped to end Polio in Nigeria and did quite a lot in improving nutrition.

He also mentioned how farmers used to have trouble getting fertiliser, but now he has constructed the world’s second-largest fertiliser plant from the ground up.

“So, Nigeria now, not only export, we actually export 37% of our fertilizer to the United States of America,” he said.

In the petroleum industry, Dangote claimed to have built a refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, something no one had ever done before. He revealed that the Dangote Refinery exported 400,000 metric tonnes of petrol in May 2025 alone.

He added that because Nigeria no longer imports gasoline, the nation is no longer dependent on it.

The Goalkeepers event, which was organised by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for the first time in Lagos, brought together world leaders, decision-makers, and activists to evaluate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.
