“Streaming Drives Monthly Internet Spend to N216bn.
Nigerians are consuming internet content at an unprecedented pace, with monthly usage up over 501% since 2019, largely due to streaming services. Monthly internet usage rose from 125,149 TB in December 2019 to 753,389 TB in March 2024, while spending on internet access increased from N36 billion to N217 billion. The average cost of 1GB of data is N287.5. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this growth, driving a shift to online activities. Streaming services like YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify have fueled this surge, and mobile data usage is expected to continue growing. However, challenges such as low broadband penetration, a digital urban-rural gap, and the high cost of smartphones persist.
