The NDPC will conduct an investigation into the reported unauthorized access by NIMC to enrollees’ data.
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) announced its intention to investigate the reported unauthorized access to enrollees’ personal data by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, a National Commissioner of NDPC, stated this in Abuja on Sunday in a statement signed by Mr. Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations of NDPC.
Olatunji mentioned that this investigation is a regulatory measure following public concerns about illegal access to personal data by a group called XpressVerify.com.
NDPC had previously engaged with NIMC on data protection and held a workshop in February. NIMC has initiated an internal investigation and assured full cooperation with NDPC. NDPC aims to uncover the truth behind the allegation and review legitimate means for verifying enrollees’ identities. Additionally, NDPC plans to audit trails of unauthorized data processing and monetization.
Those found violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, will face legal consequences. Olatunji instructed that preliminary investigation findings be made public within seven days. (NAN)
