Court revokes Sowore’s bail, orders his arrest by police and DSS

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has revoked the bail earlier granted to Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), following his failure to appear in court for trial.

The bail was withdrawn on Tuesday after Sowore was absent during the scheduled proceedings.

During the session, prosecution counsel, Kehinde Akinlolu, SAN, informed the court that Sowore was aware of the hearing date but still failed to attend, arguing that his absence was part of efforts to delay the trial.

He therefore urged the court to revoke the bail granted to the defendant.

Justice Umar noted that although Sowore had written to the court requesting an adjournment, no reason was provided in the letter to justify his absence.

Following the submissions, the court revoked the bail and adjourned the matter to June 22, 2026, for further hearing.

BACKSTORY…

The decision by the Federal High Court in Abuja to revoke Omoyele Sowore’s bail follows proceedings in an ongoing criminal trial where questions were raised about his absence from court.

The court’s action came after the prosecution informed the judge that the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) was not present for the scheduled hearing despite being aware of the date. This prompted a request for stricter measures, which the court considered alongside concerns about delays in the trial process.

Although Sowore had written to the court seeking an adjournment, the judge noted that no clear reason was provided to justify his non-appearance, which influenced the decision to take further action in the case.
