In yet another accidental airstrike carried out by the Nigerian Security Forces during a gun battle between them and bandits in the Yauni community in the Zakka Ward, Safana Local Government Area, Katsina State, over seven civilians have been left dead.

The incident took place on Saturday and according to several eyewitnesses, three security officers were found dead, including two police officers and an operative of the state-owned Community Watch Corps (CWC).

More from the eyewitness reports also stated that the bandits had initially planned to attack residents in the community who were going to vote in the local government elections on Saturday. However, the security forces got wind of this attack and prevented them; this led to a fierce gun battle between them.

A Nigerian fighter jet was brought in as a reinforcement to the battle, and it accidentally dropped a bomb on the community after the bandits had left and circled the village. This killed 6 people and left one woman injured.

Muntari Sada, a resident of Zakka, said, “The jet deployed after the bandits had withdrawn and circled the village before striking a cluster of huts belonging to a family outside the village.

“Six family members were killed in the airstrike, and their bodies were carried in bags.”

This wouldn’t be the first time an airstrike accidentally kills innocent people in their fight against bandits.
