The successful neutralization of Kachala, the second-in-command to gang leader Kachala Shuaibu, was the culmination of a series of strategic operations by the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, under the banner of Operation Accord III and with the support of Other Hybrid Forces (OHF).

A Strategic Ambush and Fierce Firefight

The decisive moment came on September 11, 2025, when a combined force, acting on credible intelligence, launched an ambush in the bandit-infested Ofere Forest and Ayetoro Gbede axis. Although the initial attempt to intercept the criminals was unsuccessful, the determined troops, while on their way back to base, were ambushed themselves. This turn of events led to a fierce exchange of fire, where the gallant soldiers demonstrated superior firepower and tactical skill, outgunning the criminals and neutralizing one on the spot.

A subsequent search of the encounter site revealed a trove of evidence and supplies, including a fully loaded magazine, 31 mobile phones, a blood pressure machine, packs of Tramadol, fetish charms, and ₦16,000 in cash. The presence of blood trails confirmed that several other bandits fled with serious injuries.

According to a statement from Lieutenant Hassan Abdullahi, spokesman for the 12 Brigade, “Subsequent intelligence later revealed that among those who escaped wounded was Babangida Kachala, the feared second-in-command to Kachala Shuaibu. He was later confirmed dead.”

A Broader Campaign for Peace

The neutralization of Kachala is the latest in a series of successes for Operation Accord III. In a separate operation on September 5, troops working under Operation EGWUA A TITE II intercepted a courier working for the criminal gang near Tunga, seizing weapons and critical supplies.

These operations highlight the Nigerian Army’s “relentless pressure” on criminal elements in Kogi State. Lt. Abdullahi affirmed that the morale of the troops “remains high” as they continue to sustain aggressive patrols and ambushes aimed at completely dismantling these criminal networks.
