The Lake Chad region continues to see more intense clashes between two factions of the Boko Haram terrorist group: Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad (JAS) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

According to reports, several casualties have been recorded on both sides. ISWAP is trying to push for stricter governance under Islamic law, while JAS adheres to a more localized insurgency approach.

Bakura Doro, also known as Abu Ummaima, tried to broker peace between the two factions but met a brickwall, which also led to more violence between ISWAP and JAS.

Apart from the Lake Chad region, Nigeria’s North West and North Central regions are now feeling the heat from these two factions as they both fight over smuggling routes, recruitment bases, and local support. The rivalry has even led to clashes with local bandit factions, further complicating the security situation.

Further reports also reveal that Bakura-led Boko Haram cells in Kwarangal, Ali Mondula, and Libi Soro are pushing out trained fighters to reinforce the Saddiku-led camps in Niger State.

These fighters, under the command of a lieutenant named Mallam Bara, are being deployed to confront Dogo Gide, a notorious bandit leader who split from Boko Haram and established his own faction in the North West and North Central.

Dogo Gide has positioned himself as a protector of local communities from both Boko Haram and ISWAP, intensifying the conflict in areas like Madawaki and Allawa in Niger State.

Counter-terrorism experts are now suggesting that the fight between ISWAP and JAS could lead to openings for the military forces in the Lake Chad region and Northern Nigeria to sweep in and clear them out, as both factions are growing weaker due to the casualties and further splits from the Boko Haram terrorist groups.
