Fraud Shocker! Court Sends Ex-NHIS Boss to Kuje
Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf, was remanded in the custody of the Kuje Correctional Centre by a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on Monday.
The order was given by Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu after Yusuf was arraigned and pleaded to the charges. Yusuf allegedly abused his office to confer undue advantages on himself in 2016-2017; he also allegedly awarded contracts without following the due procurement process.
However, he pleaded not guilty at the arraignment on all five counts read to him.
Yusuf’s attorney O.I. Habeeb subsequently moved for the remand of his client in the custody of the EFCC pending hearing on the bail application.
The trial judge, however, declined this request.
Justice Nwecheonwu then ruled that custody was transferred from EFCC to Nigerian Correctional Service once a defendant is arraigned. Consequently, she ordered the remand of Yusuf in the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his bail application.
The judge adjourned the matter till February 12, 2025, for the hearing of the bail application.
On January 29, he was arrested at his residence by operatives of the EFCC.
According to the court, touch on the purchase of a vehicle at the cost of N49,197,750 against the budgeted sum of N30,000,000, the EFCC charges Yusuf for allegedly using his position at the time to confer undue advantage to himself by approving.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Yusuf on five counts amended charge bordering on alleged fraud.
