NFIU issues strong warning, disowns fake circular linking it to BNBEX, urges Nigerians to beware of deceptive platforms.
The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has officially distanced itself from an online platform called BNBEX. The agency has issued a warning to the public about a fraudulent notice that incorrectly claims the NFIU is reviewing transactions made by Nigerian users on this platform.
In a statement released on Wednesday, May 14, and signed by Sani Tukur, the Head of the Strategic Communications Department at the NFIU, the agency made it clear that it has no connection to BNBEX and has not started or approved any compliance checks related to the platform. The NFIU stressed that it has not validated BNBEX’s operations in any way.

“The circular was not issued by the NFIU and is completely unrelated to any of the Unit’s current regulatory or compliance efforts,” the statement noted.
The agency also refuted the existence of a so-called “Nigerian Financial Surveillance Regulation” mentioned in the widely circulated document. The NFIU clarified that no such regulation exists within Nigeria’s legal or financial oversight framework.
The NFIU pointed out that the misleading circular, which was posted on the BNBEX website, falsely claimed that the agency was conducting a compliance review of all transactions made by Nigerians on the platform. The NFIU labeled the document as entirely fake, fabricated, and deceptive, emphasizing that the logo and insignia used were not those of the agency and were likely forged to mislead the public.

Additionally, the NFIU clarified that it does not have offices in the Central Business District of Abuja or any other location outside its official headquarters at No. 1 Monrovia Street, Wuse II, Abuja. This clarification was made in response to reports that the fraudulent circular attempted to lend credibility to its claims by referencing non-existent NFIU branches.
In light of this situation, the NFIU urged Nigerians to be cautious and to verify any communications that claim to be from the agency through its official channels. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious materials or misinformation to the Strategic Communications Department at info@nfiu.gov.ng.
The NFIU serves as the national center for receiving and analyzing financial disclosures related to suspected proceeds of crime, and it plays a crucial role in combating money laundering, terrorism financing, and other related offenses.
