UNIBEN has suspended its student union following an assault on an LP gubernatorial candidate.
The University of Benin’s management has authorized the indefinite suspension of the university’s Student Union Government. In a statement released on Monday by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, it was mentioned that the suspension was prompted by an attack on the Edo State Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, allegedly carried out by certain students believed to be affiliated with the student union. The suspension came into effect from Monday, April 29, 2024.

The statement explained, “The university management has reviewed the findings of the panel tasked with investigating the incidents that occurred in the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club on Friday, April 12, 2024.
“After careful consideration of the report by the management, the Vice Chancellor has endorsed the suspension of the university’s student union. This suspension, which is indefinite, commences immediately, effective from Monday, April 29, 2024.
“As a result, all student union officers are instructed to hand over all union properties in their possession to the Dean of Students’ Affairs by 4pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
“In the interim, a Caretaker Committee comprising representatives from faculties, schools, and institutes has been established to oversee students’ activities during the suspension period.
“The Vice Chancellor’s directives are communicated for the attention of the university community and the compliance of former union officers as necessary.”
