Davido Honors Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers at FIFA World Cup Performance

Popular Nigerian afrobeats singer Davido has drawn widespread attention after using his perfomanced at the FIFA World Cup to honour the abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oyo State.

During his performance in Los Angeles, Davido wore a custom-made jacket bearing the names of the 39 abducted students and seven teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, alongside the message, “Bring Them Home.”

Meanwhile, several social media users have described the gesture as a show of solidarity with the victims and their families amid growing concerns over their safety and continued captivity.
Images and videos shared online showed Davido proudly displaying the jacket, which featured tags bearing the names of those affected by the abduction.

By taking the message to a global stage watched by millions, the musician used his international platform to draw attention to the ongoing security challenges in parts of Nigeria and amplify calls for the safe return of the victims.

Many fans and supporters have applauded the singer’s humanitarian gesture, describing it as a powerful use of celebrity influence to advocate for vulnerable citizens and keep the conversation about the victims alive.

Following coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area, the Oyo State Police Command has launched a large-scale manhunt and rescue operation after gunmen kidnapped 39 students and staff.

Ayanlade Olayinka, a deputy superintendent of police and the state’s police public relations officer, said in a statement on Friday that the attacks happened early in the morning.

Shortly after the attack, the  bandits beheaded the maths teacher. Additionally, the terrorists have since opened negotiation channels and have also boldly stated their demands.

Since the incident, several videos of the victims in inhumane conditions have circulated social media.
