Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, is currently buzzing with final preparations for the national PDP convention despite a potential worsening internal wrangling between factional camps in the opposition party.
The convention, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, may be the most contentious in PDP history due to a party faction’s withdrawal.
Prior to the event, the National Working Committee, headed by National Chairman Umar Damagum, suspended Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary; Umar Bature, the National Organising Secretary; and Kamaldeen Ajibade, the National Legal Advisor, for a month due to alleged anti-party activities.

This was the follow-up to the Federal High Court of Abuja’s Justice James Omotosho’s decision to suspend the convention due to the party’s disregard for its own regulations.
Omotosho based his decision on the party’s leadership’s failure to have its designated officials to sign the PDP convention notice before sending it to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Consequently, the judgement prohibited INEC from keeping an eye on the event.

However, when Justice Ladiran Akintola ordered the PDP to hold the convention through an ex parte move, the Damagum-led NWC received relief.
On Wednesday, the Lekan Salami Stadium, venue of the PDP convention, wore a new look, with massive decorations in the party’s colours still ongoing as of Thursday morning.
The event is anticipated to draw more than 3,000 delegates from the Federal Capital Territory and the 36 states of the federation.
Party leaders, important stakeholders, and foreign observers, including diplomats, are also anticipated.

Important national officers, such as a new National Chairman, National Secretary, and other important NWC members and their deputies, will be elected at the convention.
The PDP convention will feature the election of key national officers, including a new National Chairman, National Secretary, and other key members of the NWC and their deputies.
