FG Launches National Digital Platform to Register and Monitor Teachers

In a groundbreaking move on Monday, 25th August 2025, the Federal Government of Nigeria officially launched a state-of-the-art digital portal aimed at overhauling the registration, licensing, and ongoing monitoring of teachers across the Federation. The unveiling took place in Abuja, spearheaded by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, with collaborative support from the United Kingdom’s education partnership programmes.

This initiative is a pivotal step toward establishing a credible national teacher database, closing gaps in human capital management, and ultimately enhancing professionalism within the education sector.

Digital Transformation: From Registration to Real-Time Monitoring

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the portal as part of a commensurate wave of reforms aimed at positioning Nigeria’s education as globally competitive and ethically sound. He emphasised that the portal would streamline:

  • Teacher registration, licensing, and renewals nationwide
  • Scheduling of professional exams like the PQE (Professional Qualifying Examination)
  • Tracking of career progression and performance metrics through a unified national system.

This digital approach aims not only to simplify administrative processes but also to ensure transparency, accountability, and inclusive teacher support across all regions. Dr. Alausa made it clear that the intent is transformational: no more needless visits to offices, no more opaque processes—just a portal where everything is clear, traceable, and efficient.

Safeguarding Standards: Ethics, Inclusion, and Innovation

A hallmark of the new system is the mandatory Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework. Minister Alausa was unequivocal:

“This is not punitive; it is protective. It is about safeguarding our children and upholding the moral integrity of our classrooms.”

With this framework, no school—public or private—may employ any teacher without full clearance. Private schools are now required to use the portal’s secure verification system to authenticate the registration and ethical standing of their staff.

Dr. Ronke Soyombo, Registrar of TRCN, explained that this portal is the centrepiece of her 100-day digitalisation plan for the Council. Teachers can now register, check exam results, and print their certificates from home—no need for travel or queues.

She also shared several bold enhancements:

  • The PQE has been streamlined from 23 subjects to five core modules: foundational mathematics, literacy, digital literacy, safeguarding, and pedagogy.
  • By October, the portal will feature an AI-powered lesson-plan generator, offering context-specific instructional materials to support daily teaching.
  • TRCN expects the reforms to yield a 50% increase in certified teachers, raise teaching standards to global benchmarks, and deepen child protection measures.

This framework covers both technological efficiency and humanitarian values—ensuring that every child learns under properly screened, well-supported educators.

Global Backing and Local Ownership: Partners Weaving Progress Together

The launch – more than just a local upgrade – attracted substantial international commendation. Chikodi Onyemerela, Director of Programmes at the British Council, hailed the portal as:

“A significant milestone in transforming Nigeria’s education system.”

Meanwhile, Ian Attfield, Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, emphasised that the strengthened data systems will energise teacher motivation and ensure informed policy decisions rooted in real-time insight.

Locally, Mohammed Isa, Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, emphasised the importance of digital accessibility. He advocated for inclusive features such as screen readers, digital braille, and sign-language support, aligning with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

On the technological side, Dr. Patrick Adeleye, CEO of TeckPlus Digital Solutions, revealed that the portal development spanned 20 months, responding to long-standing issues of fragmented teacher data and bureaucratic delays. This system now anchors the Education Management Information System (EMIS) under the Ministry of Education.

Empowering the Heart of Education: A Vision Realised

What began as an administrative need has unfolded into a broader vision—a 21st-century ecosystem for teaching and learning in Nigeria. With this portal:

  • Teachers feel respected and supported, with easier access to professional development opportunities and resources.
  • Parents and communities gain confidence, knowing only verified, credentialled individuals teach their children.
  • Schools and policymakers gain clarity and control through live data and centralised records.
  • The education system becomes inclusive and resilient, harnessing AI, digital tools, and ethical frameworks for better outcomes.

As Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, Minister of State for Education, aptly put it at the launch:

“We are not merely unveiling a portal; we are opening a new chapter—where technology, innovation, and efficiency become the heartbeat of teacher professionalism in our country.”

This isn’t simply a technical upgrade—it’s a heartfelt commitment to elevate teaching as a noble profession, enrich learning environments, and safeguard the future of Nigerian education.
