A community leader in Warri South-West Local Government Area, Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, has appealed for calm and a peaceful resolution following the Supreme Court’s order to delineate the Warri Federal Constituency.
In a statement issued to journalists in Warri, Ekpemupolo stressed that the Ijaw people have always been known for maintaining peace and should not allow the current situation to turn violent.
“The Ijaw nation has always been peaceful and must not depart from that tradition,” he said.
He warned that the political tension surrounding the Independent National Electoral Commission’s, INEC, failure to conclude the delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency should not be allowed to escalate or be hijacked by individuals seeking violence.
Ekpemupolo urged all parties to remain calm regardless of the situation, while also calling for an urgent meeting of community leaders to discuss possible solutions to the impasse.
“We must all work together to ensure a peaceful resolution. INEC must do the right thing and help restore peace in Warri and surrounding communities,” he stated.
He further appealed to residents of Warri, including the Ijaw, Itsekiri and Urhobo ethnic groups, to remain patient while waiting for INEC to implement the Supreme Court judgement.
On Monday, indigenous Ijaw women staged protests and shut down oil flow stations in the Gbaramatu area, insisting they would continue the action until INEC fully implements the Supreme Court ruling on the delineation of wards and polling units in the Warri Federal Constituency.
