Akin Osuntokun, a former Political Adviser to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has alleged that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is attempting to shift public focus from the corruption allegations against him by raising claims about the importation of a toxic substance.

El-Rufai had earlier written to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, requesting clarification over reports that his office imported 10 kilograms of thallium sulphate, a highly poisonous and tightly controlled chemical, into the country.

Responding to the development during an interview on Arise Television, Osuntokun described El-Rufai’s comments as reckless and irresponsible, insisting that such claims should not distract from the established corruption case against the former governor.
“It is obvious that he was using it to distract attention from the well-established corruption charges against him. So the opposition itself has not been doing itself much good by the conduct of its own people; they are shooting themselves in the foot.”
The former presidential spokesman also stated that the opposition is unserious and acting irresponsibly.
“The opposition is unserious, not ready for elections, and we are less than a year to the election. The opposition in Nigeria is acting irresponsibly,” he added.
