End of an Era: Elon Musk’s DOGE Agency Officially Shuts Down

The United States government has formally terminated the Elon Musk-led US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) following the expiration of its 18-month mandate.

President Donald Trump appointed Elon Musk, the American entrepreneur and founder of Tesla Inc., in November 2024 to manage DOGE, an effort intended to enhance efficiency and save expenses throughout the US government. The Trump was the president.

After assuming office in January 2025, Trump signed an executive order that officially brought DODGE into establishment. The initiative officially reached its pre-scheduled expiration date on July 4, 2026..

Aiming to eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse, Musk led DOGE in launching sweeping actions to downsize the federal workforce and overhaul agencies, targeting the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in particular.

Following its establishment, DOGE’s cost-cutting efforts led to more than 260,000 federal employees to leave government employment in 2025, according to the office of management and budget.

The departures included reductions in force, early retirements, deferred resignation programmes and a hiring freeze.

However, midway through Trump’s first year in office, Musk publicly blasted the president’s “Big Beautiful Bill” and accused him of ruining his “hard work” at DOGE, ruining the friendship bond between the two. In an X tweet, Musk claimed that Trump won the election because of him(Musk),

A day after the criticism, Musk announced his exit from DOGE.

What is DODGE?

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was established shortly after President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 and was placed under the leadership of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Created to reduce federal spending and streamline government operations, the agency quickly embarked on an aggressive cost-cutting campaign that resulted in the elimination of thousands of federal jobs, the restructuring or closure of several government programmes and sweeping reviews of agency budgets.

The agency also drew scrutiny over its access to sensitive government data and its rapid restructuring of federal departments, including the dismantling of large portions of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and cuts affecting education, health and environmental programmes.

Investigations on DOGE

In the months leading to its closure, reports emerged of growing disagreements within the Trump administration over the pace and scope of DOGE’s reforms, with critics arguing that the agency had exceeded its mandate.

Following accusations that agency had access to private information from the Treasury Department, Social Security Administration, and payment networks, advocacy and labour groups have now increased their calls for Congress to look into the agency.

Over the past year, litigants have filed more than a dozen lawsuits to challenge the Trump administration’s actions, which halted major federally funded programs, cancelled financial awards, and executed widespread layoffs.

Against this backdrop, the decision to formally shut down DOGE marks the end of one of the most controversial experiments in government restructuring in recent U.S. history.
