Ayra Starr finally speaks out about comparison with South Africa’s Tyla
Grammy-nominated afrobeats singer Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, also known as Ayra Starr, has addressed the constant comparison with her South African counterpart Tyla.
The young singers attracted comparisons online after they were both nominated in the maiden Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys.
Ayra Starr became a viral sensation after releasing her hit track ‘Bloody Samaritan’ in 2021.
The same year she released her debut studio album “19 and Dangerous” and it included her other chart-topping songs “Away,” “Rush” and “Bloody Samaritan,” which she later remixed with American singer, Kelly Rowland.
She has also recently dropped a new album called ‘The Year I Turned 21’,
With numerous awards and accolades, Starr has become one of the continent’s fastest-rising artistes and was among the Nigerian music stars nominated for this year’s Grammy Awards.
It was her song “Rush” that earned her a first Grammy nomination in the Best African Music Performance category, making her the youngest Nigerian female artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award in that category.
Although she lost the award to Tyla, the South African singer, and that was what birthed the comparisons between the two singers.
Addressing the comparison for the first time during an interview with BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Ayra Starr said she’s not letting the comparison affect her relationship with Tyla.
According to Ayra Starr described Tyla as her “homegirl” and “G”, saying that the comparisons do not bother her, stressing that their friendship remains unaffected by naysayers.
In her words “Tyla is my homegirl, that’s my G. That doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t care about all of that. Less noise, more music.
“Let’s support each other, like, why not, like afrobeats and African music is about to take over the world and we have to come together to be able to do that. There’s no need for comparisons”.
