Reflecting on a viral bathroom selfie she took with American pop star Coco Jones and an R&B singer, Ayra Starr, jokingly declared herself the first African to take a bathroom selfie at the Met Gala—even though fellow Nigerian artist Tems, who was also in the photo, is African as well.
“First African to take a bathroom selfie at the MET Gala, period!” she quipped.
Ayra Starr made her Met Gala debut at the 2025 edition of the prestigious event, held on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
She joined other celebrities such as fellow singers Burna Boy, Tems and Tyla; renowned novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and popular designer Swanky Jerry, as part of the African contingent to the world’s foremost fashion event.
