A UK judge on Friday remanded American R&B singer Chris Brown, the ex-boyfriend of pop sensation Rihanna, in detention until June 13 on charges of assault related to an incident that occurred in 2023.
With Brown’s upcoming tour already sold out in the Netherlands on June 8 and Germany on June 11, the judge’s decision to deny his bail plea casts doubt on when it will begin.
According to police, Chris Brown, 36, was charged with assault in a London nightclub in 2023 after being taken into custody at a hotel in Manchester early Thursday morning.
District Judge Joanne Hirst ordered him in custody until a plea and trial preparation hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court on June 13 after he appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
In addition to performing in Germany on that day, Brown has a number of gigs scheduled in the UK and Europe in June and July before travelling to the US.
On February 19, 2023, Brown was accused with “grievous bodily harm with intent” in connection with “an assault, which reportedly took place at a venue in Hanover Square in London,” according to police.
According to reports, Chris Brown allegedly used a bottle to attack music producer Abe Diaw at the Tape nightclub in London’s upscale Mayfair neighbourhood.
This incident is not the first of its kind as the Singer has been remanded in similar occurrences.
The two-time Grammy winner’s strong R&B voice and later rapping career brought him acclaim at an early age, but accusations of abuse, including domestic violence, later damaged his reputation.
Recall that Rihanna was allegedly forced to miss the annual Grammy Awards after he was found guilty of beating her prior to the 2009 ceremony.
Chris Brown got into another incident yet again with members of hip hop singer Drake’s entourage at a New York nightclub in 2012, during which French basketball star Tony Parker was injured in the eye by a thrown glass bottle.
