Reactions are stoked by a video showing food critic Opeyemi Famakin criticizing Wizkid, Ayra Starr, and Brent Faiyaz’s use of champagne flutes.

Following a new video in which he criticizes well-known Nigerian musicians Wizkid and Ayra Starr as well as American singer Brent Faiyaz, Nigerian food and wine critic Opeyemi Famakin is making headlines once more.
At the Bof event in Paris, Wizkid, Brent Faiyaz, and Ayra Starr were seen talking to themselves in the video. Take note that Wizkdi’s latest single “Piece of My Heart” features Brent Faiyaz.

During their conversation, Wizkid, Brent Faiyaz, and Ayra Starr were seen drinking champagne from the event’s champagne glasses. However, food critic Opeyemi Famakin did not take kindly to this video.

Opeyemi Famakin condemns the three artists in the video for the way they held champagne flutes at the international fashion show.

This comes after a video assessment of Cubana Chief Priest’s restaurant in Imo State by Opeyemi Famakin, in which he commended the establishment’s aesthetics but chastised the staff for their handling of pastry, and for microwaving a burger that he said should have been served à la carte. In the video, Opeyemi Famakin states: “I would simply call two names, but I see three  persons holding the Champagne flutes incorrectly. Ayra and the other man who plaits his hair did not open it correctly. But many have questioned why the third person in the video, Wizkid, cannot be mentioned by name by the culinary reviewer.

Who is this Guy

Food journalist Opeyemi Famakin likes to claim to be Nigeria’s most prominent food critic. Ile-Ife, in Osun state, Nigeria, is where he was born. Of the three children, he is the eldest. He was raised in the Ikoyi neighborhood of Lagos State, Nigeria, as well as a small town outside of it. Ope’s father was a government employee who was frequently posted. He had to deploy overseas during one of those posts, so his family relocated there. His early years were thus spent in the United States.

In the same way that Ope is, his mother is also a foodie. She took him and his brothers to many restaurants both domestically and overseas as kids so they could sample and learn about various cuisines and cultures. He would ask her questions about the cuisine, such as “what the food is called, how it was made,” when they were dining together as a family. His passion in culinary journalism was fueled by her. She knew he was interested in cuisine, so she would purchase him cookbooks and take him to certain upscale places.
