Viola Davis: I Had No Idea Chadwick Boseman Was Dying
Award-winning actress Viola Davis has spoken about her first impressions regarding Chadwick Boseman’s behavior when doing Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, confessing that she did not realize the health struggles he was going through privately.
Talking to The Times on Friday, Davis recounted working alongside Boseman on the 2020 film-the last before his eventual demise.
It did not take long for her to recognize how highly the man needed pampering from back rubs given by his girlfriend, and music dousing most likely used for meditative purposes.
“You know, there was a part of me that was a little judgmental-why do you need all that? Little did I know that they were doing it because he was dying,” Davis said.
Boseman, who was renowned for his commitment to work, was privately battling stage IV colon cancer while filming during the summer of 2019. His diagnosis, which he had withheld from the public, had previously progressed from stage III in 2016. The actor, however, succumbed to his illness at just 43 years old on August 28, 2020.
After his death, Davis paid tribute to him as a “beautiful man and artist,” adding that he was highly devoted to his work. “He had one of those qualities that are very few have today, whether they are young or old, that wholly give into the form of acting-no egos, none of the rest of it,” she said.
Her most recent comments indicate the quiet struggle which Boseman had to endure while continuing to deliver in his powerful legacy performances as he would always leave behind some resilience and artistry.
