Joke Silva Shares Why She Kept Her Maiden Name
Joke Silva Reveals Olu Jacobs’ Surprising Advice on Why She Kept Her Maiden Name Even After Marriage.
In a society where many a woman will not escape this pressure to change to the name of her husband after marriage, Joke Silva, an actress of great acclaim and the Nollywood icon, explains why she wants to carry her name.
And it turns out that this explanation may surprise you.

Speaking candidly on The Leadership Podcast with Stephen Akintayo, the screen goddess, and multiple award-winning actress disclosed the factors surrounding her choice, which, she said, were far from being any act of defiance — it was her husband Olu Jacobs’ idea.
“He [Olu Jacobs] was the one who actually advised that I don’t,” Joke noted. “Because he understood the importance of branding. He was like, my brand has started building as Joke Silva and changing brands several years after one has been using that brand, as far as he was concerned, could cause problems for me.”

Now that is what you would call a visionary partner.
Yet Joke maintained that her identity as Mrs. Jacobs has never been a matter of contention among family, friends, and inner circles, even if professionally, she hadn’t used his surname.
“So, we kept the name Joke Silva as the brand, but within the circles, there was nobody who didn’t know I was Mrs. Jacobs. It [changing the last name] really didn’t matter.”

It has been over 30 years, creating great examples of love, respect, and strategic thinking in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Their story serves as constant motivation for fans and fellow actors alike. True partnership is working on each other’s behalf — in life and in the limelight.
