The 2024 Academy Awards proved to be a memorable, albeit lengthy, affair. While host Jimmy Kimmel kept things lively with playful digs at nominees, the real drama unfolded in the awards themselves.

Early Upsets and Heartfelt Speeches:

The night kicked off with an unexpected win for Da’Vine Joy Randolph, taking home Best Supporting Actress for her role in “The Holdovers.” This film, nominated for five awards in total, set the stage for a night of surprises. Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” soared with a win for Best Animated Feature despite his absence from the ceremony. Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” managed to snag Best Original Screenplay out of its five nominations, while Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Memorable Moments and Poignant Messages:

John Cena’s surprise appearance as an announcer included a bit of lighthearted nudity, adding a dash of humor to the evening. In a more serious vein, “The Zone of Interest” director Jonathan Glazer delivered a powerful speech connecting his film’s themes to the ongoing conflict in Gaza after winning Best International Feature. The win for Best Supporting Actor went to Robert Downey Jr. for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” a welcome surprise for many. As expected, the “Godzilla Minus One” team brought their signature action figures on stage to accept the award for Best Visual Effects.

Poor Things Reigns Supreme, Oppenheimer Takes the Crown:

Throughout the ceremony, “Poor Things” emerged as a favorite, winning awards for Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, and Best Actress for Emma Stone (beating out Lily Gladstone’s performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon”). The night ultimately belonged to “Oppenheimer,” which swept the technical categories with wins for Cinematography, Original Score, Best Director, and Best Actor for its star. The film capped off the night by securing the coveted Best Picture award.
