Nigerian rapper Phyno has praised modern parents for their growing support of their children’s talents, contrasting it with his own experience growing up.
Speaking on the “In My Opinion” podcast, the award-winning artist shared how his parents initially disapproved of his decision to pursue music.
When I first started, my parents didn’t support my music career. It’s so different now,” he said, recalling the struggles he faced in convincing them to accept his passion.
Phyno highlighted how the current generation of parents has embraced a more encouraging approach. “I think parents today understand what it means to support their kids’ talents,” he explained. “If they see their child loves music or sports, they don’t discourage them. Instead, they find ways to help.”
He drew a sharp contrast between then and now, using examples from his childhood. “Back then, if your parents came home and caught you playing ball, they’d seize it, punish you, and sometimes even beat you,” he joked. “It wasn’t about nurturing passion—it was about discipline and focus on traditional careers.”
Phyno commended today’s parents for spotting potential early and investing in their children’s dreams. “Now, fathers see their sons playing ball and enroll them in an academy.
Some even buy a ball for their one-year-old and start calling them ‘Neymar.’ It’s amazing how much things have changed,” he said.
He also acknowledged the changing perceptions of creative careers. “I don’t blame my parents, though,” he admitted. “Back then, music wasn’t seen as a real career.
There wasn’t much money in it, and people thought musicians were unserious—just guys with dreadlocks walking around. But now, the world sees talent differently. It’s a gift to be shared.”
Phyno wrapped up his thoughts with a shout-out to the current generation of parents. “This era of parenting is something else. They understand the value of talent, whether it’s in sports, music, or anything creative,” he said.
His reflections struck a chord with listeners, sparking conversations about how far society has come in supporting young people’s dreams. For Phyno, this shift is worth celebrating, as it paves the way for the next generation to thrive.
