A deadly clash was witnessed between secondary school students and soldiers stationed in Abako town, Benue State.
According to reports, the whole clash between the two parties was because of a beef between one of the soldier’s lover, Veronica, and the school’s head girl (name withheld).
Peter Anande, a teacher in the school, narrated the whole incident when one of the soldiers gifted his girlfriend, Veronica, a nice pair of earrings. She then wore the earrings to school but had them seized by the school’s head girl, who was acting according to the school’s policy on students wearing accessories.
Veronica then reported the incident to the army personnel at the nearby checkpoint.
Anande further narrated, “While it was break time, the head girl went to the market for breakfast, and at the checkpoint, she was harassed and assaulted by the soldiers for taking the earrings.”
A teacher, on hearing the news, went to intervene but also got the beating of his life.

Fellow students of the school heard the news, gathered themselves, and attacked the checkpoint where the soldiers were. The soldiers in turn opened fire on the students as a form of self-defense from the students.
The students overpowered the soldiers and burnt their checkpoint with tires, wood, and petrol.
Local residents in Katsina Ala stated that they had always been worried about the presence of soldiers in the town and are now asking why soldiers will stoop so low as to engage in conflicts with secondary school children, putting them in harm’s way.
Many residents called for them to be removed from Abako town.
The local police confirmed the situation but assured that normalcy had been restored. The school, in response to the incident, stated that they would hire a lawyer to file a petition to the Chief of Army Staff in Abuja.
