Get ready to jump back into the Mushroom Kingdom! Following the massive success of the 2023 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie, Nintendo has announced a sequel is in the works.
Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Set for April 2026:
In a video presentation, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri confirmed the next Mario movie is in development. Scheduled for release on April 3rd, 2026 in the US and many other markets, the film will then roll out to additional territories throughout the month.
Building on the foundation of the first movie, Miyamoto promises a “bright and fun story” that expands the established world. Illumination Studios Paris, which animated the first film, will return for storyboarding duties under the direction of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Animation is already underway!
The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Movie Still in Development:
While details remain scarce, Nintendo also confirmed the previously announced live-action Legend of Zelda movie is still progressing. Wes Ball, director of the Maze Runner trilogy, will be at the helm, with Avi Arad and Miyamoto producing.
New Games for Switch Announced:
Nintendo didn’t stop at movie news. Gamers can look forward to two exciting releases for the Switch:
- Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake: This beloved GameCube title gets a fresh coat of paint for the Switch, arriving on May 23rd, 2024.
- Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD: A remaster of the 3DS game Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, hitting the Switch on June 27th, 2024.
Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy Collection Expands:
Starting March 12th, 2024, the Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy collection adds even more classic titles to the mix. You’ll be able to revisit Dr. Mario for the original Game Boy, along with Mario Golf and Mario Tennis for the Game Boy Color.
