Enugu By-Election: Labour Party Takes INEC to Court Over Exclusion

The Usman Nenadi-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing it of “wrongfully excluding” its candidate from the upcoming June 20 Enugu North senatorial by-election.

In a statement issued on Monday, the national publicity secretary of the party Ken Asogwa, said the Enugu north seat became vacant following the death of Okey Ezea, the LP senator, who died on November 18, 2025.

According to Asogwa, the party formally informed INEC on May 11, 2026, of its intention to hold a senatorial primary for the by-election after the commission released the nationwide by-election timetable, including the Enugu North contest.

The statement reads in part, “At the well-attended primary election, which attracted thousands of party members from the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district, Amb. Simon Ejike Eze, a distinguished diplomat, emerged as the consensus candidate of the party,” the statement reads.“The party is, however, deeply concerned that despite complying with all statutory requirements and procedural guidelines, it was denied access to upload the particulars of its candidate on INEC’s nomination portal.”

According to the LP spokesperson, all attempts to resolve the matter—including official protests and correspondence with INEC—failed before the submission window closed on June 2, 2026.

He further added that the party followed all legal and administrative requirements under the Electoral Act and INEC’s current regulations in nominating its candidate.
