The federal high court in Abuja has sentenced ex- minister of power, Saleh Mamman to 75 years in prison over corruption related to the hydroelectric power projects in Mambilla and Zungeru.
The sentence was given by Justice James Omotosho. Mamman was convicted on all 12 counts preferred against him by the EFCC.
Mamman was found guilty on 12 counts by the trial judge, who also decided that the sentences would be served consecutively, totalling 75 years in jail.
He received sentences of three years and two years for counts four and five of the charge, and seven years for each of the ten offences.
In addition, Justice Omotosho mandated that the convict’s sentence start on the day of their arrest.
Additionally, the judge ordered all security services to apprehend Mamman wherever he may be.
The court further mandated that the former minister return the remaining N22 billion from the purported hydroelectric power projects in Mambilla and Zungeru, as well as forfeit all funds and assets recovered from him to the Federal Government.
Recall that Saleh Mamman was convicted in absentia on May 7.
BACKSTORY…
In July 2024, the EFCC arraigned Mamman on a 12-count charge that included allegations of money laundering and conspiracy with ministry officials and certain private companies to “indirectly convert” the sum of N33.8 billion intended for the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.
Before closing its case, the EFCC called 17 witnesses who testified before the court and submitted 43 exhibits. The court also ordered the forfeiture of foreign currency recovered from the convict.
Saleh Mamman was charged with 12 counts by the EFCC in July 2024, including suspected money laundering and conspiracy with ministry officials and certain private firms to “indirectly convert” N33.8 billion intended for the hydroelectric power projects in Zungeru and Mambilla.
He however entered a not guilty plea to the FHC/ABJ/CR/273/2024 accusation.
Before concluding its case, the EFCC presented 43 evidence and brought 17 witnesses to testify before the court.
