Tehran, the Iranian capital has been rocked by a fresh wave of explosions on Wednesday, as US President Donald Trump said the war with Iran could be over in two or three weeks.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, was murdered by airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel. The battle swiftly escalated into a regional crisis that has driven up oil and petrol prices and posed a threat to the world economy.

However, Trump, whose views on the conflict have fluctuated between belligerent and conciliatory, stated late on Tuesday that the violence would end in “two weeks, maybe three.”

The White House said he would give “an important update on Iran” to the nation at 9:00 pm Wednesday (0100 GMT Thursday).

Tehran has maintained that there are no ongoing talks and that it has not reacted to Washington’s alleged 15-point proposal to settle the conflict.

However, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the Islamic republic has the “necessary will” to put an end to the conflict as long as its adversaries promised it wouldn’t resurface.

Iranian state media stated on Wednesday that Tehran was under attack and that explosions were heard in the capital, raising doubts about the state of diplomatic talks.

Strikes occurred close to the former US embassy, which was converted into a museum called the “Den of Spies” and has come to represent the long-standing hostility between Tehran and Washington, according to an AFP correspondent.

Iranian media reported that strikes caused “significant damage and destruction” to steel plants in central and southwest Iran.

In addition to intercepting an Iranian missile attack that injured 14 people, including an 11-year-old girl, according to medics, the Israeli military stated that it had carried out the strikes.

Additionally, Israel reported on Wednesday that its air defences had reacted to a missile fired from Yemen, which was the third attack by the Houthi rebels, who are supported by Iran, since they joined the conflict over the weekend.
