Hermès is being sued for exclusively offering Birkin bags to certain customers.
The Hermès fashion house allegedly restricted the sale of Birkin handbags to certain customers who had to earn the privilege by purchasing other items first. Two California residents filed a lawsuit against Hermès, accusing the company of using illegal sales tactics and violating antitrust laws. The lawsuit claims that Hermès employees encouraged customers to buy additional items like shoes and jewelry to gain access to Birkin bags.
These hand-sewn leather bags, symbols of luxury and prestige
These hand-sewn leather bags, symbols of luxury and prestige, can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and are typically available only in-store through a ceremonial sales process.
Customers deemed worthy of purchasing a Birkin are invited to private rooms to view them, with salespeople instructed to use the bags to encourage additional purchases.
The lawsuit seeks class-action status for thousands of American consumers who allegedly felt compelled to buy other Hermès products to obtain a Birkin. Neither Hermès nor the plaintiffs’ lawyers have commented on the lawsuit yet.
