FCT Poll: Heavy Security Deployment as Police Enforce Movement Restrictions, Curfew

The Federal Capital Territory police command has deployed personnel across the territory ahead of the Area council elections in view of the FCT polls.

This comes after the leadership said that, on election day, mobility across the FCT will be restricted from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the exception of election officials and vital service providers.

The FCT Polls, Area Council elections are scheduled for February 21, 2026, according to the PUNCH.

Candidates from 17 different political parties have been approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission to run in the upcoming local elections in the Federal Capital Territory.

Six area council chairperson seats and 62 councillorship posts accross the territory’s six area councils are among the 68 elective positions up for election.

Additionally, INEC revealed that around 1.68 million registered voters are qualified to cast ballots in the FCT poll.

In a statement on Wednesday, the FCT police command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh said the deployment, carried out under a comprehensive operational order, involves a coordinated effort with sister security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The statement titled, “The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has deployed personnel across the FCT as part of its comprehensive operational order for the February 21, 2026 FCT Area Council Elections.

“This massive deployment has enjoyed a rich exchange of operation and human resources from Sister security agencies, comprising of the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Air Force, Nigeria Navy, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, among others”

She stated that in order to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair election process, Miller Dantawaye, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, instructed all deployed officers to uphold professionalism and provide sufficient security at polling places and collation centers.

Adeh announced the movement restrictions and asked citizens to cooperate with security guards and follow security protocols during the time.

She gave voters the assurance that sufficient safeguards had been put in place to allow them to carry out their civic duties in a fearless and peaceful manner.
