As the 2027 election draw near, tensions, anticipation, optimism and raised concern continues to heighten. In recent weeks and months, Nigerians have seen a very significant increase in defection across different parties including APC, PDP, Labour party among others.
Going down memory lane briefly;
In 2023, there was so much high spirit and positive anticipation in the wake of the general elections as Nigerians were engulfed with the hope that the break of a new dawn would come with change that would rescue Nigeria positively.

However, voters were met with rude shock as the results took a completely different turn, and Tinubu emerging victorious as president. Following his emergence and swearing in into office in May of 2023, Nigerians have since witnessed surging levels of inflation, hardship, insecurity, food crisis, plunging the nation into more and more debt among other gruesome challenges.
Chimamanda Adichie recently confirmed this when she stated in an interview that life in Nigeria is incredibly difficult for the average Nigerian. More and more reports continue to confirm this. From countless reports about herdsmen attacks to FAO’s March report and warning on food crisis.
The government that once promised change to Nigerians have failed to uphold this promise and Nigerians have lost faith in it.
While several political figures including Labour party leaders and former governor of Rivers state Amaechi have stated that the 2027 elections will not be like the 2023 elections as Nigerians are fed up of the state of things and would come out in mass to exercise their civil responsibility, the question still remains if Nigerians are really ready for the polls.
What has been the other of the day is selfish politicians putting their own interest as priority, running about like headless chickens, pledging loyalty to diverse political parties, internal crisis all in a bid to prove a point.
One is forced to wonder what the actual point of candidacy if not to pursue the interest and well-being of the populace. Again another question arises, what is the real essence of standing against all odds as patriotic Nigerians to vote if at the end of the day, only to have an unwanted person forced down the throats of the same masses they ought to be serving.

A survey by our correspondent revealed that several Nigerians have completely lost faith in the Systems that function in Nigeria with a good number of persons sighting corruption as a key reason.

One of the respondents said “I was very optimistic about the 2023 election. For the first time I came out to vote because there was a man who was there to protect the interest of the people, but the results shocked me”
When asked, another respondent who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “I don’t think I will want to go home to vote. The last time we did, how did it turn out?”

Additionally, INEC yesterday revealed that it has received and overwhelming number of party registration request ahead of the 2027 elections, however, this does not in any tangible way indicate that Nigerians are truly ready for the coming elections or that there will be any significant difference in 2027 elections from that of 2023 given that the ruling APC and the current Tinubu-led administration is completely bent on having its second tenure under the guise of “e mi lo kan” regardless of what is really obtainable or what the people want.
Is there a slight chance or hope that the current administration can right its wrong in a second tenure if reelected or it will simply be vicious cycle repeating to haunt Nigerians.

Amid all the uncertainty and the confidence of opposition political parties and coalition leaders to unseat Tinubu, one thing that remains a constant is that elections in Nigeria certainly comes with its own aura, from the campaigns to lobbying, to sharing palliatives that don’t do much, to vote buying, to the heavy social media banters among other things whish will continue to heighten as the 2027 election draws closer and if Nigerians truly want to see a brink of hope for positive difference then we must BRACE UP.
