Security: No one is coming to save us

    Insecurity in Nigeria has consistently been on the rise at a rapidly alarming rate with hundreds loosing their lives to herdsmen attacks across different regions of the country including; Benue, Zamfara, Borno, Edo, Enugu, Plateau among others. 

    A previous study by EJ Akonye showed that over 10,000 people have lost their lives to these attacks between only 2016-2019 and these numbers have been on the increase giving the state of the nation’s security in recent times.

    In a recent social media video, concern has been drawn to the development that almost every state in the nation has recorded cases of such attack or killings.

    One of the most recent cases being the attack on Yelwata community in Benue state that left over 200 dead. Despite president Tinubu’s visit to the state, these attacks have continued to occur as only two days after Tinubu’s visit, the former PDP LGA chairman of Wannune community of the state was killed .

    Following this was another incident where a Benue links bus was hijacked along Otukpa-Otukpo road, with all its passengers kidnapped on Sunday June 22.

    The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa in a previous statement stated that the military troops had not been successful with its operations in arraigning the perpetrators of these heinous crimes because the intelligence it receives are most times flawed or wrong.

    From the response by the military, security operatives and the Nigerian government generally, there is no substantial assurance that the security condition of the county will improve.

    Several political figures including Sowore, Apostle Suleman, Falz among others, have publicly suggested the need for Nigerians to be able to defend themselves however lawmakers have not looked in that direction while countless Nigerians continue to be victims of the county itself.

    An uncertainty continues to hang over the air where security is concerned as Nigeria could happen to anyone at anytime . Is anyone is really coming to save us.

    While security operatives continue to reiterate their commitment to restoring peace and order to the nation, the reports of recorded tangible progress is not at par to the incidents of deaths and attacks .

    Additionally, the focus of the current administration seems to be on securing its second tenure ahead of the 2027 elections. Is anyone really coming to save us?
