Federal University Dutse, FUD, in Jigawa State is set to broaden its academic offerings after the National Universities Commission, NUC, approved 30 new programmes for the institution ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval also clears the way for the university’s Faculty of Law to begin academic activities, bringing a new professional discipline into its growing list of programmes. The development was disclosed by the university in a statement issued in Dutse and reported by Punch Newspapers.
According to the university’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya, the approval was communicated through a letter dated September 11, 2026. The letter, referenced NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15, was signed by NUC’s Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, and addressed to FUD Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel.
For prospective students, the announcement is significant because the newly approved programmes cut across some of the fields currently attracting considerable attention in Nigeria, including technology, health sciences, education, environmental studies and finance.
NUC approval expands technology, health and education options at FUD
Among the programmes cleared by the NUC are Bachelor of Science degrees in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Information Systems. The university will also commence a Bachelor of Laws programme in Common and Islamic Law under its newly approved Faculty of Law.
The expansion is also noticeable in the health sector. Approved programmes include Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Optometry. These additions will widen the number of health-related disciplines available to students seeking university education in Jigawa and the wider northern region.
Education is another major area covered by the approval. The university is expected to offer education programmes in Physics, Biology and Mathematics, alongside Educational Management, Early Childhood Education and Adult Education. Arabic and English education programmes are also included in the approved list.
Beyond these fields, the approval includes areas such as Parasitology and Entomology, Environmental Standards, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology and Remote Sensing. Science Laboratory Technology, with options in Biology Technology and Biochemistry Technology, is also part of the academic expansion.
The NUC approval extends beyond undergraduate education. Postgraduate offerings approved by the commission include programmes in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance, and Information Technology, covering PGD, master’s and doctoral levels in the listed areas. Master’s programmes in Banking and Finance and Accounting and Finance were also approved.
Back story: Federal University Dutse has grown since its 2011 establishment
The latest approval comes as part of the continuing development of Federal University Dutse, which was established by the Federal Government in 2011. According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the university received its charter on February 9, 2011, and was formally inaugurated the following month. It was among the universities created by the Federal Government that year to expand access to higher education in underserved parts of the country.
The university initially started with faculties including Agriculture, Arts and Social Sciences, and Sciences. Over time, its academic scope has expanded into additional fields, reflecting changing educational and manpower needs. FUD’s own website describes the institution as a federal university committed to teaching, research and service, with Professor Ahmad Mohammad Gumel listed as its current substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The institution’s academic growth has also been accompanied by NUC accreditation activity. Recent NUC records show full accreditation for programmes including Business Administration, Economics, Sociology, English Language and Literature in English, and Islamic Studies Education at Sule Lamido University in Jigawa, highlighting the commission’s continuing regulatory role across the state’s university system.
The current development at FUD therefore represents another stage in the expansion of higher education opportunities in Jigawa State.
FUD says new programmes will address changing workforce needs
Reacting to the approval, Vice-Chancellor Ahmad Gumel described the development as an important step in the university’s efforts to introduce academic programmes that respond to contemporary needs.
He said the new courses were designed around areas such as technology, science education and health, while also seeking to prepare students for changing demands in the labour market. The university’s position reflects a wider shift among Nigerian tertiary institutions towards programmes linked to digital skills, specialised healthcare, environmental management and other emerging sectors.
For students, the practical question now is when and how applications for the newly approved courses will open. Since the NUC has approved the programmes for full-time study from the 2026/2027 academic session, prospective applicants will need to rely on official Federal University Dutse admission notices for specific entry requirements, departmental conditions and application procedures.
The development also gives prospective undergraduates and postgraduate students in Jigawa and neighbouring states a broader range of programmes to consider without necessarily having to travel far from the region for specialised academic training.
The NUC’s decision is therefore more than an increase in the number of courses at Federal University Dutse. It marks an expansion into artificial intelligence, data science, law, health sciences and other specialised areas that are increasingly important to Nigeria’s education and workforce landscape.
