The Federal Government is reportedly intensifying the possibility of securing the transfer of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who is serving currently a nine-year sentence in a UK prison for organ harvesting.
On Monday, Nigeria sent a high-level delegation to the UK to meet with British officials.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, were among the team that met with representatives at the UK Ministry of Justice in London earlier on Monday.

Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, subsequently welcomed the team to the Nigerian High Commission in London.
Reputable sources claim that the meeting was a component of President Bola Tinubu’s attempts to obtain either an early release for Ekweremadu or a review of his sentence on legal and humanitarian grounds.
According to sources privy to the development, the Nigerian government intendsbegin to negotiations about potential prisoner-transfer agreements, compassionate release, or other relief allowed under UK law.

“We are working on an appeal for a prisoner exchange for him to serve the remainder of his term in Nigeria,” a top official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confided in Daily Trust.
“Consultations is still ongoing with the UK authorities,” he added.
In March 2023, Ekweremadu, a seasoned legislator and three-time Senate Deputy President, was found guilty at the Old Bailey alongside his wife, Beatrice, and physician, Obinna Obeta.

They were convicted of plotting to take advantage of David Nwamini, a young Nigerian guy, in order to remove his kidney and treat Ekweremadu’s sick daughter.
