JUST IN: 37 feared dead as fire guts another high rise building on Lagos Island

A fire outbreak occurred on Thursday at a multi-storey building housing a Polaris Bank branch on Broad Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

Videos and clips making rounds on social media captured thick smoke billowing from the building as residents and business operators gathered around the scene.

On the frontlines of the crisis, emergency responders and firefighters battled the advancing flames to contain the blaze and protect neighbouring buildings from destruction.

However, while the containment operation and rescue effort continues, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown as of report.

Additionally, neither the Lagos State Government nor any emergency management agencies issued an official statement regarding the incident.

Unconfirmed reports circulating across social media platforms claim that at least 37 people lost their lives in the tragedy. Although, efforts were still ongoing to obtain responses from the relevant authorities.

BACKSTORY…

In January 2026, the State Government revealed that at least 133 human lives and N19.72 billion worth of property were lost to various fire incidents in 2025.

This is a terrible rise from 2024, when fire accidents in the state claimed 91 lives and destroyed property valued at N19.52 billion.

Meanwhile the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) earlier called on residents to embrace safer practices and strictly follow existing safety regulations to reduce the growing cases of fire outbreaks across the state.

Speaking in Lagos, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said that residents could prevent a significant number of fire incidents if they comply with basic safety measures and institutional guidelines.
