Panic as fire guts high-rise UBA building in Lagos, occupants trapped

A deadly fire has broken out at a section of Afriland Towers, which houses a branch of the United Bank for Africa(UBA), and other companies in the Marina area of Lagos Island.

Several videos of the incident, taken from various perspectives and posted on social media, showed dense smoke rising from the tall skyscraper as fear swept over the crowded business district.

Residents and onlookers used a ladder to rescue some of the unidentified people who were shown trying to jump from the multi-story structure in one of the videos.

The front of the building was crowded, and people were seen in a panic.

In a statement signed by Deputy Controller General Ogabi Olajide, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident and stated that its personnel were fighting the disaster at the six-story structure on Broad Street.

“A fire outbreak is currently being battled at a six-storey building on Afriland Tower, Broad Street, Lagos Island. The call was received at 13:38 hours, and crews from Ebute Elefun Fire Station and Sari Iganmu Fire Station responded,” it partly read.

It clarified that the disaster began in the basement’s inverter room before the smoke eventually spread to many levels and devoured the building.

“Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations has been concluded dousing the earlier panic before the arrival of the first responders,” it added.

As of the time of report, no casualties had been officially confirmed.
