First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Calls on Burna Boy, Davido to Help Poor Nigerians

Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has urged Afrobeats celebrities Burna Boy, Davido, and Asake to use foundations to support Nigerians.

She stated that there are many wealthy people in Nigeria and urged them to help those in need because “the burden on the government is huge.”

The first lady made the appeal in Lokoja, Kogi State, on Saturday, where she launched the national community food bank. Speaking on empowerment programmes in Kogi, Tinubu announced the donation of ₦100,000 to empower another 2,000 petty traders in the state.

“Nigeria is a great country. We have a lot of wealthy people. But our priorities are different. And I think it’s high time we started helping those who need help in the country.

“I want to appeal to our young ones in the entertainment industry. I’ve mentioned it before, and I will use Akon, a music icon who does a lot of great charity work.”

Speaking further, she said, “The Burna Boys of this world, Asake, all of them, Davido. We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money.

“Good cars are good; a Maybach is good. Rolls-Royce is good, but still you can still help. The burden on the government is huge.

“You can still help. There are pepper sellers. There are vegetable sellers. There are okra sellers, melon sellers, akara kulikuli. Ankara is delicious. I can tell you that,” she added.

Additionally, First Lady Remi urged Nigerians not to look down on legitimate means of making out a living.

Backstory…

Her most recent comments comes amid previous backlash over comments encouraging women to hawk local groundnut snack(kulikuli) and bean cake (akara).

In a recent outing, Senator Oluremi Tinubu advised women to start small businesses like frying and selling of bean cake(akara), roasted corn and kulikuli (a local peanut snack).

Speaking in a video while highlighting the administration’s support for small businesses through grants, the First Lady said such ventures can be started with minimal resources and stressed that the government had provided grants, not loans, to support Nigerians.

Her comments quickly sparked mixed reactions online, with many users arguing that the advice does not reflect the harsh economic realities currently facing millions of Nigerians.
